Little Drummer Boy

Some friends of ours just recently bought a new home and subsequently invited us over for a New Year's Eve dinner. This couple is very musically inclined. He plays a slue of instruments including the piano, guitar, drums, sax, keyboards and he also D.J.'s. She used to sing every weekend at a local lounge. So in their home you find evidence of their love for music in just about every room in their house.

When we got to his "jam" room, where he has a piano, a guitar, and his drums set-up so that he can "jam" Leonard jumps on the drums and starts toying around. Well of course, monkey-see-monkey-do....so Little Leo wants to play the drums too. We, at first, assumed he would bang a few times, maybe get scared and the allure would quickly fade. WRONG! He totally went to town. And you know what? For a 1-year old...he was good. He could keep a beat and while he is no musical prodigy there is an undeniable natural musical ability there.

Irene has always said that he had a talent/love for music. We are talking since he was very, very little. She first made that observation literally when he was maybe a month or two old. And anyone who knows my kid or has spent any length of time with him will know he loves to dance. Music captures his attention unlike anything else. The second any kind of music comes on, any kind at all, he is grooving. Leonard and I have noticed his preference for anything fun, festive and good for dancing but you should have seen him last night banging his little head for those drums.

It was awesome to watch! I felt very proud and today wonder when is too early to start him on music lessons? Okay, okay...I know it is too early still but music is definitely something he loves and I want to do whatever I can to help him develop his talents. Leonard and I joked today about how he better develop a love for rock-n-roll because someday he is going to be front row at his son's garage concert.

That's pretty cool Lizzie! I bet anything that Lisa will have something to say about lessons for the young. I saw a boy on Oprah who sounds just like your little guy and he's under 4 or 5 and is an amazing drummer.

It's always exciting to see some "spark" of talent in your kids. How perceptive of Irene! That house your friend bought sounds pretty cool. How nice that you guys are social! Happy New Year Lizzie! Good Luck in figuring out how to approach Little Leo's interest. I'm not a good one to ask. : )
